Gay and lesbian travelers continue to make Palm Springs one of their top destinations to visit in the United States, putting this small city in competition with much larger ones for a niché market's business.

Lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender travelers have a $63.3 billion impact on the nation's economy annually, according to the U.S. Department of Commerce and Community Marketing Inc., a gay and lesbian market research company.

The most recent gay and lesbian tourism report from the company shows that Palm Springs is tied for 13th, with Atlanta and Miami, for top U.S. destinations.

While beautiful weather for most of the year is a big draw, Dale Dawursk says it helps that Palm Springs has a vibrant gay community.

You don't have to worry about walking down the street, holding hands, touching each other or talking to each other as a couple, said Dawursk, owner of Desert Paradise Resort Hotel.

Playing host to two massive LGBT events each spring for the past 20-plus years has helped area businesses and its residents develop a sensitivity to travelers' needs, said Mariah Hanson, owner of Club Skirts.

She is one of the party promoters behind last week's Dinah Shore Weekend that drew an estimated 15,000 to 20,000 lesbians to Palm Springs for pool parties and more.

This weekend, city hotels, restaurants and attractions are busy with attendees of the White Party, a weekend of events, dances and more pool parties for gay men.

This is a city that's host to so many diverse groups, Hanson said. It's important to them to learn how to be sensitive to all issues within those groups.

There's a synergy that's created that's a win-win for everybody because we're good for business.

Local trade organizations do not have data on the number of LGBT visitors to the desert annually or their estimated impact on the local economy. But hoteliers acknowledge it's an important group representing many room night bookings.

Aftab Dada, general manager of the Hilton Palm Springs Resort, said Hanson's group generated more than 1,600 room nights over three days for his hotel as well as the Hyatt Regency Suites Palm Springs and the Marquis Villas Resort.
